Optional Skill Vs Mandatory Skill

by | Aug 1, 2020 | Public Speaking | 20 comments

One of the biggest mistakes people make in public speaking is this. I don’t see any mistake bigger than this. And I’m using this word mistake very carefully, by the way. Listen to this incident very carefully. I just met one of my friends, old friends, and he said Praveen on Sundays I’m free and I’m thinking to start to learn something on Sunday.

Learning Guitar Vs Learning Public Speaking

And I said, congratulations, you must do that. Tell me what exactly you’re thinking to start. He said I have two options in front of me. One is to start learning guitar. And second, maybe I can join some speaking club so that I can start learning how to speak. And for a moment, I thought, Hey, wait a minute.

There’s no comparison between guitar and how to speak or speak in front of people. The biggest difference between guitar and this skill is guitar is an optional skill in case you don’t want to make a career in guitar. Even if you learn guitar this is not going to help you to grow in your life. It’s just a hobby.

Hobby Vs Necessity

But speaking in front of people is not at all an optional skill. It’s a compulsory skill, which you have to learn how to speak in front of people. What do you mean by that? It is a very simple thing.

The biggest mistake people do is this, they consider speaking is only for professional speakers. Speaking is only for motivational speakers. No, no matter who you are at the infancy stage, middle stage, at the top of the career, you are standing in front of people and speaking. Sometimes those people are junior, senior, maybe employees, maybe your clients or the investors. Or even then people are sitting in front of me. And if you are speaking, these are 10 different people. Different understanding of life, different perspective. This, all 10 people are actually looking towards you with different perspectives. Organizing your thoughts and presenting your thoughts in such a way that these 10 people understand, it’s a skill.

And when you learn that skill, you grow in your life. What is the comparison between guitar and speaking skills? Optional, essential. This is the biggest mistake people make. They think public speaking is a hobby, a skill I love to speak, that’s why I want to learn whether love you hate.

Speak And Grow

If you want to grow in your life, you have to speak effectively in front of people, which is a skill. Organizing your thoughts, producing your thoughts in a given time to achieve your objective. To educate people, inspire people, motivate people, influence people. It’s a skill.

Very True… Speaking is an essential skill…most of us don’t realise this…till it is very late… mostly people like me who are introverts. I would strongly recommend that schools should mandatorily teach this Life Skill. Thanks a ton for excepting me as a part of Speak and Grow family… looking forward to grow…

    Yes Praveen,

Hard skill will allow you to enter but soft skill will make to stable.

Good speaking skill is part of soft skill and unfortunately not being tought along with hard skill.

in the light of fact we tend to learn this skill after studies.

    Thanks for nice thought

Playing guitar on stage does not give u any knwoledge. It is like listen the guitar and get entertained. But speaking on stage gives you knowledge on the subject and if very effective speaker can change the point of view which otherwise is very difficult.
