What Is The Difference Between Entrepreneurship And Job?

by | Feb 14, 2020 | Entrepreneurship | 2 comments

A few years ago, I was speaking at a conference and the theme was Entrepreneurship, one of my favourite subjects. From the audience, one gentleman who was still employed, raised his hand and he raised his hand and said that one reason that he wants to start a business is because his job, J.O.B is boj B.O.J.

Boj is a Hindi work which means burden.

I had to think for a moment before I responded to this question. After a few moments, I asked this gentleman to imagine that he had resigned from his job, and now as an entrepreneur he has a team of around 10 people. As an owner of any organisation, you pass on your beliefs, your ideas, your thoughts to your team. Thats how it happens normally.

So you are sitting inside your cabin and there are 10 people sitting outside thinking “Job is Boj”…”Job is Boj”…”Job is Boj”, Will your company grow? No!

Commonality Between Job and Entrepreneurship

Hard Work Is A Must

I have industry experience of a total of 18 years out of which 10 years, I was an employee. My last position was of a Sr. Marketing at a large scale MNC and it was my dream for many years to be at that position and I loved my job.

Whether it is Job or Entrepreneurship, one thing that is common between both is that there is hard work required. Even the TATAs, Ambanis, Birlas, they don’t get up in the morning and say, hey I am TATA, Ambani, Birla, let me go back to bed. No! They wake up, get ready and go to work.

Now a days, there is a lot of talk about passive income. People want to make money even while they are sleeping. Is that easy? No!

Even I have passive income sources, I have online courses with over 5000 students from 125 countries. There is a high chance that while I am making this video, someone is buying my course. Is that easy? No!

Instead, passive business is more difficult than active business. In an active business, like for example a B2B entrepreneurship, or even a job, you know where you can reach, there is a definite limit. But in passive business, you don’t know where you can reach. The world is your market. Imagine the amount of hard work you need there.

Some people have this illusion that if you have a business, you don’t have to work and you automatically make money. But I have not met any person like this.

Difference Between Job and Entrepreneurship

Expertise and Experience in Single Vs Multiple Areas.

When you are working as an employee, you get an expert in one or two departments. When I was working as Sr. Marketing Manager, I had to focus only on marketing. So your scope of learning is limited in a job.

There are many examples where some people have done exceptionally well in their jobs but i firmly believe that if you were sent on this planet, you should make the most of it and learn as much as you can.

Entrepreneurship gives you that opportunity. When I and my wife started this journey, no one in our family did business before. We started pretty much on a blank slate which was an advantage. We had to learn everything from scratch, right from finding an office, to putting phones, tables, chairs, making bills, admin work, housekeeping work, finance, account, sales, client management, everything.

After 8 years, have we become experts in everything, No but just enough to guide someone at some level.

One biggest advantage in entrepreneurship is that it allows you to gain experience in multiple areas of your life.

Uncertainty Vs Predictability

Job gives you a certain amount of predictability. You know mostly where you would be 10 years from now. On the contrary Entrepreneurship gives you no such prediction. You don’t know where you would be 3 years from now, whether you would be plus or minus in revenue.

If someone had told me three years ago, that Pravin you will have 5000 students from 125 countries selling your eLearning courses, I would have been like, you are joking. Its not something that one can predict.

Life itself is so uncertain. We don’t know when we go to bed whether we will be waking up or not. So when life can be so uncertain, entrepreneurship helps you deal with uncertainty better.

After you have made peace with uncertainty you life will become more stress free because you will be prepared for whatever comes your way, good or bad. You start living in the present without worrying about the past or the future.

Conclusion

Both Job and Entrepreneurship requires one to work hard..very very hard. Without the hard work there is no success.

Entrepreneurship allows you to gain multiple skills in this one lifetime.

And it teaches you to deal with the unpredictability of life better.
