Why To Improve Accent In Public Speaking

I would like to know your perspective on this. Many times, I have seen people worried about accent especially when they speak in front of people or speak in front of camera and they speak on social media, theyโ€™re really worried about their accent. Is it really worth worrying about?

Let’s understand that today What do I mean by accent by the way? Everyone has his or her own way of using languages; distinct and unique way of pronouncing words and using languages. Everyone has it.ย  If you go to German, German people have their own accent, you go come to India, Indian people, we have our own accent. But understand one thing, accent is nothing but the output of influence you have from outside not from inside. So, example in case if someone taking birth in Gujarati family, that child will develop Gujarati acts. A South Indian child will never develop Gujarati accent. So, why because of the outside atmosphere, and it happens throughout the life even when we leave the families it happens. For example, when I was in college, we had Ghalib Sir in college, I love Ghalib Sir. He was like Shahrukh Khan and the way he used to walk, the way he used to sing and the way he used to speak, and even at gatherings, the way he used to host the shows, very influencing man. So, I got so impressed and every time whenever I was getting an opportunity to speak is like people used to say, “Hey, are you copying Ghalib Sir, and I used to say, if it is yes, then good copying someone good, a good person. So, the point I’m making that the change in my accent, even in speaking was the influence from outside.

Is It Really Worth Worrying About Accent?

Even in Toastmasters, I remember I was I watching Dananjaya Hettiarachchi stuff, he’s s a world champion of public speaking, I see something, I might have seen that video more than hundred times. Now, after watching that, the amount of influence I had because of that video on my speaking is huge. And when I was speaking on the stage, my friends are to say, “Hey, are you trying to copy the Dananjaya Hettiarachchi?” I said, “At least I’m copying someone good.” So, changing accent is the influence from outside. My question to you is this, is it really worth worrying about accent because you change that atmosphere, your accent will change. If you are really taking your atmosphere correctly, if you’re really taking the atmosphere seriously. If you don’t have a habit of getting influenced by people, then you’re losing an opportunity to grow in your life. I think the life is all about getting influenced by cut, paper and grow. So, I got influenced by Ghalib Sir I got influenced by Dananjaya Hettiarachchi. I got influenced by Peng Joon in training or in business. So, life is all about that. So, when you will get influenced by people, you will learn a lot of things from those people. One thing will be their way of speaking accent, their way of speaking, you will get influenced easily.

Is it really worth worrying about? Even if your accent is changing throughout the life. So, the way I’m speaking now, even if I see my video, three years old video, I will say that I am a completely different person, I used to speak differently. Now I speak differently. And maybe after three years, I will speak differently. Absolutely, no problem in that. Is it worth worrying about accent? And the answer to that question is no.

You Should Be Worried About Your Thoughts, Ideas, Values, Suggestions, Feedbacks Content

You should be worried about your thoughts, ideas, values, suggestions, feedbacks content. So, in case if you’re among those people who are not making videos or not speaking in front of people, because you’re worried about your, whatever accent you have, you say I have a mother tongue influence and I’m worried if people will say “Hey, he’s speaking or she’s speaking in Gujarati accent or South Indian accent.” It is absolutely okay, as long as the content is good. Content is valuable. As long as you’re sharing something from your experience, know it, it please go ahead.

So, my perspective on accent is this, doesn’t matter what your accent is. If you have a habit of choosing correct people in your life, if you have a habit of getting influenced, it will keep on changing. But don’t wait for that perfect accent, take care of your ideas, values, thoughts, keep sharing that that’s my perspective. What you think? What’s your perspective on this? Someone should not restrict himself from public speaking just becoz of strong accent. For effective public speaking u should have a strong content nd rhe message should reach out to people. Ur body language should be positive nd thete should be energy on ur voice. Accent can be improved with practice.

Your thoughts are mind provoking and fully convincing. I like the way you share examples, as if you are to get into readers mind and narrating what he is looking next. I appreciate your journey from corporate to trainer/coach and an author.

    Good luck!

Content is important than accent. Definitely mother tongue influence will be there for every one. If your accent it adds your speech. Pleasant to listen. Imitation is part of life. We will be influenced by somebody and that influence will have impact on our performance. Only problem in imitating is comparison with original speaker. But over a period time it will be forgotten and that will become your style.

Yes sir what you say is true and more inspiring sir..
My perspective on accent is -there’s no such thing as a โ€œgoodโ€ or โ€œbadโ€ accent. But an understanding of clarity in English, and how our pronunciation can affect communication, does matter, and that’s something we can improve.
If people don’t understand because of our pronunciation, even if we are saying a perfectly correct sentence, we might get discouraged or even start to resent the language.
My perspective may be wrong, pls correct me..am ready to learn..thank you
